GT Symphony Orchestra and Choirs Present Brahms's Requiem

The Georgia Tech Symphony Orchestra (GTSO) and Choirs, along with special guest vocalists, will join to present Johannes Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem February 15th at the Ferst Center for the Arts.

"It is extremely exciting that the GTSO, Treble Choir, Chorale, and Chamber Choir are able to partner together on something of this magnitude and in such a short window of time," said Brittney Boykin, assistant professor in the School of Music and director of the Treble Choir and Chorale. "We have been tackling German and learning music since January 8th."

Boykin highlighted the dedication of Georgia Tech student musicians to tackle the ambitious performance. "The world recognizes Tech students for their brilliance, but they are also extremely artistic."

Special soloists joining the blended ensembles will be Amanda Sheriff, soprano, and Calvin Griffin, baritone.

The concert will open with a short bhajan, Ram Tori Maya, by Reena Esmail, for Western orchestra and Hindustani singers. Guest singers will be two Tech students, Aaditya Hingoo and Dhruv Pargai.

"My arrangement is designed with young musicians from both cultures in mind, with the aim to draw them towards one another, one step at a time," Esmail said in notes on the piece. "Western string players need not have any Hindustani experience, and Hindustani singers need not have any Western music experience."

This opener continues GTSO conductor Chaowen Ting's commitment to feature an Asian woman composer in each concert, honoring Ting's tenth year as orchestra director.
